Review
So we recently reviewed the Astro A40′s and they were great. In fact, the A40′s received our Gadget of the Month: September for Biofare.org, so why would I bring up the A40′s? Well today I’m doing the review for their competitor: TRITTON. Their answer to the Astro A40s are the TRITTON AX Pro’s. TRITTON has made a wide range of gaming accessories from their line of headsets to gaming glasses that apparently help you last longer playing video games, don’t ask. Anyway, this is my opinion of the TRITTON AX Pro’s.
So lets discuss what is inside the AX Pro’s that makes them worth $170. First, they have precision 3D directional audio using Dolby Digital 5.1 surround sound. That’s a lot to say, directional audio does its job and what I love is being able to control the volume of all aspects of audio. Being able to make the sub loud and make the front quiet, that’s true control. They also include 8 performance-tuned speakers, pretty fancy huh? Of course the AX Pro’s feature a detachable, flexible, microphone with a mute function. They also have a little control box taking care of some of the wire placements. But that sounds nice and everything, is there a downside? F*** YES.
Judging my previous response, you could say I wasn’t too pleased with some aspects of the AX Pro’s. This is too true with the amount of cords involved with the AX Pro’s. It’s quite ridiculous. While I understand that the amount of wires needed to provide good audio, really? It got ridiculous. Two different power sources coming from the outlet is required. The surround sound is great but the basic audio is horrible and non-existent, imagine listening to music with audio coming from everywhere but kinda distorted. My other huge gripe was how snug these headphones are, if you have big ears (like me), then just don’t bother.
So concluding, while the TRITTON AX Pro’s is a pretty good pair of headphones, the amount of cords KILLED IT for me. It became stupid. The key to Astros success was simplicity, it wasn’t hard to create an awesome audio setup..it’s not rocket science TRITTON, Y U NO MAKE KICKASS HEADPHONE FOR GOOD AMOUNT OF MONEY? I’m sorry if it seems like I’m throwing TRITTON under the bus but this is frustration that became bottled up while I had to use the TRITTON’s instead of my Astros. Anyway, it’s definiely your call. If I was you, I’d either dish out the extra money if I had it laying around or look into other headset companies like TurtleBeach. Sorry TRITTON, I guess I’m a debby downer.
