Steve Jobs, 1955-2011

Untitled-2

When I wrote my article about Steve Jobs leaving Apple due to his health problems in August, I didn’t think the next article I would’ve written would be about his death.

In 1976, Steve Jobs founded Apple Computers with Steve Wozniak and Ronald Wayne.  35 years later and it is one of the most successful companies in the world.  It revolutionized the PC industry with introducing the mouse and a comprehensive graphic user interface that people could understand.

Fast forward to 1985, Jobs would get kicked out Apple due to a internal power struggle.  He would later go on to say that being kicked from Apple was one of the best things to happen to him, “The heaviness of being successful was replaced by the lightness of being a beginner again, less sure about everything. It freed me to enter one of the most creative periods of my life.”

Jobs would later on try to start back up in the computer game with a company called NeXT, he also would acquire from George Lucas a little animation studio called PIXAR.  The first film made would boost the studio to greatness, Toy Story.

In 1996, Apple announced they would buy NeXT for $429 million and with that, bring back Jobs to Apple but only as de facto chief, and then later on interim-CEO.  Jobs would soon start eliminating projects, making the licensing too expensive for any other producer to use the Mac OS on their machines.  Jobs also started work at NeXTSTEP, something that would later become Mac OS X.

Starting at the Macworld Expo in 2000, Jobs would announce that he would be dropping the interim from his job title and would be from now on: iCEO.  While Jobs was at Apple, he would oversee the creation of the iMac, iPod, iPhone, and iPad.  Along with a company which was on the verge of failing until he came back to save it.

In August 2011, Steve Jobs resigned as Apple CEO for the same reason that most believe killed him: pancreatic cancer.

On October 5, 2011, Jobs’ family made a statement that he “died peacefully today”.  After the news broke of his death, Twitter exploded with tweets, almost anything regarding the late founder or Apple was trending.  At one point, Twitter went down due to the amount of tweets.

For those of us lucky enough to get to work with him, it’s been an insanely great honor. I will miss Steve immensely.”
-Bill Gates

Flags at the Cupertino campus were at half-mast and even at some Apple stores, the light of the Apple were dimmed.  Slowly the reactions came out, Bill Gates saying, ”The world rarely sees someone who has had the profound impact Steve has had, the effects of which will be felt for many generations to come. For those of us lucky enough to get to work with him, it’s been an insanely great honor. I will miss Steve immensely.”

From President Barack Obama to Disney CEO Bob Iger, everyone was commenting on how Jobs effected their lives.  If you visit the Apple homepage, you will see nothing regarding the iPhone 4S but just a grayscale photo of Jobs, next to it is his name and his years of birth and death.

Not since Michael Jackson have we seen a social network reacting to a death, Jobs surely was (in my opinion) the Michael Jackson of the tech industry.  He inspired so many people and was taken away from all of us so young.

Jobs is survived by his wife of 20 years Laurene and their three children.  No doubt, he will be missed
